“Baywatch” may be coming to the big screen with Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson!
A “Baywatch” film is in the works and as of now the studios have their eyes on Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Zac Efron. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Baywatch” is not only eyeing these two actors but also has Horrible Bosses Director Seth Gordon attached with an estimated start date of February 2016.
Efron is in negotiations to star opposite Dwayne Johnson in Paramount’s Baywatch, the big-screen take on the 1990s television series about California lifeguards.
After years of development, the project seems to finally be ramping up and in recent weeks adding Seth Gordon as director. Efron’s casting sets the movie up for a production start in early 2016, likely in February.
“Baywatch” seems like it will be geared towards comedy and it’s not a surprise given the choice of director and Zac Efron being on a comedic high after “Neighbors.” The story will center around a very “by-the-book” lifeguard (Dwayne Johnson) who teams up with a young hothead (Zac Efron). They team up due to an environmental issue that may destroy their beach due to a villainous oil tycoon.
The plot may seem a bit far fetched but it fits right into the theme of “Baywatch.” If you remember the classic TV show, many people watched for both the eye candy and the sometimes ridiculous stories. This film could prove to be another success for Zac Efron as he continues to build his comedic appeal. The star power of both he and Dwayne Johnson should definitely bring in crowds as they seem to be a great match for shirtless lifeguards. The buddy formula has worked well thus far with similar films like the reboot of “21 Jump Street,” so audiences might find a similar kind of appeal in “Baywatch.”
With the film estimated to start production in February 2016, we can probably expect “Baywatch” to be released in 2017.
