After the… unfortunateness that was the trailer for “Star Trek Beyond,” many fans have turned their attention to the new Star Trek series that is set to be made by CBS.
The idea most likely being that if the movies are going to just be action flicks, then perhaps the new TV show will be their savior and will give more traditional “Star Trek” stories with the intelligence and themes we come to expect. It’s entirely possible that won’t happen as Alex Kurtzman (of the current film franchise) is also involved with the series. However, with news that “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” director, Nicholas Meyer is returning to the series it seems like the first option could be more likely. Reportedly, Nicholas Meyer would be a producer and writer for the series.
This is significant to fans as “Wrath of Khan” is widely considered to be the best of the entire Star Trek film series. True there were some changes from the original concept, but in the end many of the additions in “Wrath” ended up staying in the franchise. Plus for those who may think, “big deal he caught lightning in a bottle once, such a desperate move,” consider that he also later co-wrote “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home” and directed “Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.” Both are films that often appear at the top of best Trek film lists. He has even been asked to work on some of the following films like “Star Trek Nemesis” which many believe would have been greatly improved with his involvement. Still, “Hannibal” creator Bryan Fuller will be the show-runner for the series and made the following statement.
“Nicholas Meyer chased Kirk and Khan ’round the Mutara Nebula and ’round Genesis’ flames, he saved the whales with the Enterprise and its crew, and waged war and peace between Klingons and the Federation. We are thrilled to announce that one of ‘Star Trek’s’ greatest storytellers will be boldly returning as Nicholas Meyer beams aboard the new ‘Trek’ writing staff,”
This may cause older readers to roll their eyes or dismiss me, but I personally find it really weird that there hasn’t been a Star Trek series on TV for the past decade. Yes there was plenty of TV before the original “Star Trek” series appeared and fans had to wait almost twice that between the original “Star Trek” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” but I can’t help it. I was born in 1990, so for the first 15 years of my life there was always some sort of Star Trek series on the air. Needless to say I’m more than ready for another series. If they continue to make good choices like this, then I’d say we’re in good hands. The show is due to broadcast in 2017.
What do you think? Is this good news for the new series?
