Director Patty Jenkins was not initially in favor of Gal Gadot being cast as Wonder Woman.
In a recent interview, “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins revealed that she was disappointed when she first heard Gal Gadot was cast. After continual talks with the studio to make the film happen, the news of Gadot’s casting was a bit of a let down to Jenkins.
“I remember when I read in the news that Wonder Woman had been cast and my heart sank. I had been talking to the studio for so long about doing it and I was like well ‘that’s that’. I’m sure we wouldn’t have made the same choice.”
Honesty is a rare quality nowadays and for Patty Jenkins to be open about being wrong about her opinion is a noble act. She admitted that she wouldn’t have thought to look outside of America for casting and ultimately agreed that she would not done as well finding someone like Gal Gadot.
“Frankly, I think they did a better job than I could have because I don’t know that I would have scoured the earth as hard to find her. I don’t know that I would’ve looked internationally. I would have just looked for an American girl.”
After the success of the film and becoming closer with Gal Gadot, Patty Jenkins is undoubtedly sure that she is the Wonder Woman that we deserve. While her initial opinion left her disappointed, she could not be more pleased with how the character turned out.
“She shares every quality with Wonder Woman and that’s no joke. It’s one of those rare things. You need someone who can appear to be Wonder Woman on screen. That’s what we’re looking for; someone who can embody all of those attributes on screen.”
While many of us are reluctant about casting decisions made for our favorite characters, this is an example of a time when it feels amazing to be wrong. Patty Jenkins did an amazing job directing the film and Gal Gadot brought Wonder Woman to life as an icon for women.
What are some casting decisions you initially disagreed with but later admitted you were wrong?
