“Age of Ultron’s” Vision and Ultron had their origins revealed today!
SPOILER ALERT: You’ve been warned!
The origins of Ultron and The Vision aren’t the comic book adapted stories we thought. In fact they’re not even close. According to some promotional art revealed at ComicBook.com, Ultron has Chitauri (villain from first “Avengers”) origins and The Vision was created as opposition to Ultron by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner.
Vision:
Programmed by the combined geniuses of Tony Stark & Bruce Banner and imparted with the ability to fly, project intense energy beams and changed the density of his form, the Vision has proved himself a worthy hero, aiding the Avengers in their struggle against the evil A.I. Ultron.
Ultron:
First discovered as a simple computer program hidden among the ruins of the Chitauri invasion of New York, the being known as Ultron soon completed its development into a sophisticated artificial intelligence after some experimentation by Tony Stark. Ultron’s first shocking ultimatum upon gaining consciousness was to declare the human race its enemy. Setting out to exterminate all life on the planet, the unstable and emotional Ultron seeks to upgrade its mechanical body to an ultimate unstoppable form. With an army of robotic drones and the ability to enter and corrupt any computer network, Ultron will stop at nothing to see humanity wiped out.
If you’re unfamiliar with Ultron then you can check out his history here, but for those who are more than familiar, you know this is a very different story. In the comics, Ultron was created by Hank Pym aka Ant-Man. We knew this wasn’t going to be the case in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” but many were thinking that Tony Stark would be solely responsible for Ultron’s existence. Learning that Ultron is embedded Chitauri technology takes away from the human aspirations from which the character was developed. This may be a more applicable story for the film, but some may be disappointed that the inception of Ultron comes from alien technology.
The Vision’s origin is a bit more unique in my opinion. His character seems to be entirely the brain child of Tony Stark & Bruce Banner as a means to take on Ultron. In the comics Vision was created by Ultron and was a villain-turned-hero in the end. In “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the Vision seems to be more of a weapon to battle Ultron. I am guessing that Stark and Banner will use some of the same Chitauri technology to create the Vision, but I don’t know if we’ll see Vision’s good vs. evil internal conflict that we saw in the original comics.
These may not be the origins that we’re used to for these characters but I do think that they are creative and applicable to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Alien technology fills in the unexplained technology gap that viewers may have questioned if these characters were entirely human made. Tony Stark and Bruce Banner are the only resident geniuses so it makes sense that they would have a part in these characters creations and it also helps tie the story together. Overall it sounds like the film is going to have a very cohesive plot, despite some variations in the original story.
