Universal is creating a Monster cinematic universe!
No one will deny that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been pretty successful. So successful that other companies are following suit. DC Comics of course are getting themselves together to challenge them and as a fellow comics publisher this makes since. Universal on the other hand has decided to use their classic monsters. Yes instead of like a lot of other studios, Universal remembered that it had a connected film universe back in the day and now plans to revive it. The first film in this plan was 2014’s “Dracula Untold.” It even underwent additional filming to add scenes to set this up. The next film planned will be a reboot of “The Mummy.” Supposedly it will be closer to the original Boris Karloff film than the early 2000s Brendan Fraser movies.
This makes a lot of sense for Universal. As mentioned earlier this isn’t a new concept for them. Sure the original 30s versions of “Dracula” and “Frankenstein” were meant to be their own standalone movies at first but later sequels starting with “Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man” changed that. Some feel this is where the classic series went downhill but there is no denying that they were incredibly successful and appealed to plenty of fans. The only hiccup for this could be the fact that almost all of the famous Universal Monster characters come from books. OLD books, as in they are all public domain. Any studio can make a Dracula film provided that they don’t use any of the things created from the Universal films as they are still copyrighted. In fact Fox studios is making a new Frankenstein film starring James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe entitled “Victor Frankenstein.” It has NOTHING to do with Universal’s plans but it could cause great confusion for the regular movie going public.
In charge of all of this are writers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan. Their Mummy reboot is scheduled to begin filming in 2016, followed by another film about Dracula, Van Helsing, Bride of Frankenstein, and then the Wolf-man. The future looks to be shaping up very interestingly.

I'm all for this. I love the old Universal films, and think this is going to be great. Bring it on.
I would be too, the only issue would be the fact most people I know who saw Dracula Untold didn't like it.
