Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg bring us the world’s first R-Rated CG Animated Film.
From the minds of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg comes “Sausage Party.” Being the first CG Animated film to grab an R rating, this film personifies food and turns human consumption into a horrific act. The plot surrounds one particular sausage that learns of the fate of food and his journey to find out the meaning of his existence. Take a look at the red band trailer below.
In addition to Seth Rogen writing the story and Evan Goldberg writing the screenplay, “Sausage Party” also reunites many of the comedic actors and actresses we’ve seen together in many projects. Kristen Wiig, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd, Danny McBride, Bill Hader, Craig Robinson, Michael Cera, and many more all comprise this cast of voice actors. While the plot may seem ridiculous to some, the amount of high profile talent attached to “Sausage Party” is unbelievable.
Going into the plot, I’m finding it difficult to see where an R rating was necessary. I like the idea of pushing boundaries but other than the explicit language in the trailer, I fail to see any moments that would push much further than a PG rating. Some could argue the death of this food could be a bit too gruesome of a subject matter for preteens but I would say that’s subjective. Look at “Who Framed Roger Rabbit.” There were many moments that were risqué and arguably gruesome but it still got by with a PG rating.
I’m not saying that “Sausage Party” doesn’t sound interesting. In fact it looks hilarious. But I do wonder if there is more adult content other than the language. Because if language is the only reason they wanted that R rating, then they may have narrowed their demographic. This story could be told with a PG rating and still bring on the laughs from the subject matter.
