Here is my list of video games I’m looking forward to in 2017.
I’m a very diverse video game player. My selection of what I love, like, and hate is not as conventional as other gamers. I have my staples and I have my outliers and when it comes to 2017, here are my list of games that I’m most anticipating. Of course this list could change as time passes.
Friday the 13th
While I’m not particularly fond of horror games, the “Friday the 13th” video game has me intrigued. In PvP fashion you are able to choose between playing Jason Voorhees himself or one of many camp counselors. This is essentially two games in one. Playing as Jason you can unleash some brutal kills while playing as a camp counselor changes the game to pure survival. I think I’ll probably play as Jason more than the counselors and revel in the fun of a game of murderous hide and seek.
Scheduled release date: Early 2017.
South Park: The Fractured But Whole
I would have never thought a “South Park” game would be on my list until I played “South Park: The Stick of Truth.” My excitement for “South Park: The Fractured But Whole” has exponentially risen since the first “South Park” RPG debuted and if it’s anything like “The Stick of Truth,” I’m sure my experience will be filled with utter enjoyment and laughs.
Scheduled release date: March 31, 2017.
Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite
I am not good at “Marvel Vs. Capcom” games but that doesn’t stop me from playing. With revamped graphics and a new lineup of characters, “Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite” will easily make it to my list of must plays…even if I suck.
Scheduled release date: Late 2017.
Star Trek: Bridge Crew VR
Virtual reality is here and advancing quickly. Of the titles I’ve seen and played for the Playstation VR, “Star Trek: Bridge Crew” piqued my interest the most. I may be an avid “Star Wars” fan first but the appeal of being part of the Enterprise bridge crew sounds like a fresh idea. This game is a collaborative effort and you can play a variety of roles. The gameplay debut featured actual “Star Trek” cast members and even they were blown away. I love the concept of this VR simulation and hope that it lives up to its intuitive appeal.
Scheduled release date: March 14, 2017.
Mass Effect: Andromeda
“Mass Effect” is a series that I stepped away from but for an odd reason. With Bioware’s other title “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” being one of my favorite games, “Mass Effect” was a reminder that “Knights of the Old Republic” would not have another subsequent, standalone title. Seeing “Mass Effect: Andromeda” has inspired me to pick up the previous titles again before its release. The graphics look incredible and it has the RPG elements that appeal to a gamer like me.
Scheduled release date: March 21, 2017.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Everyone loves “Mario Kart.” It’s been a universal staple in gaming since the Super Nintendo. But with so many sequels, some are better than others and “Mario Kart 8” for the Wii U needed some improvements (I’ll get into that at a later time). One of those improvements comes in “Mario Kart 8: Deluxe” and that’s a brand new battle mode. Other editions include 1080p resolution and additional characters from “Splatoon” but unfortunately no new tracks. Some would rather wait for “Mario Kart 9” but addicts like myself will take what Nintendo will give us.
Scheduled release date: April 28, 2017.
Super Mario Odyssey
Some have joked that “Super Mario Odyssey” is “Super Mario GTA” with its debut trailer showing Mario in an open world city. I am personally excited for Mario exploring a new arena rather than hanging around Peach’s castle all day. Nintendo has done a phenomenal job with their key character. Whether he’s exploring his home world, cleaning up an island, or traveling the galaxy, fans have continuously enjoyed the experience. I think Nintendo’s track record speaks for itself and this will be another enjoyable title.
Scheduled release date: Holiday 2017.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Link is almost as iconic as Mario among hardcore Nintendo fans. The first “Zelda” was a redefining experience for me in the video game world and continued on in titles that followed (with the exception of “Zelda II: Adventure of Link”). Every fan has their favorite in the series and “Breath of the Wild” seems to take elements from some fan favorites, particularly “Ocarina of Time.” The game looks gorgeous and the gameplay looks to be fun-filled, intuitive, and an open world adventure. As the key launch title for the Nintendo Switch, this game will be the one to sway users towards buying Nintendo’s new console or not.
Scheduled release date: March 3, 2017.
Red Dead Redemption 2
“Grand Theft Auto” has been my “mindless release” game but “Red Dead Redemption” was like a euphoric release. Transported to another time in an open world setting, this Rockstar western was an adventure that had me heavily invested. We haven’t seen much for “Red Dead Redemption 2” but the short bit of visuals Rockstar has given us has me yearning for more. It’s a game that has built so much anticipation that it may have surpassed the appeal of “Grand Theft Auto.” Seeing how Rockstar has improved upon “GTA,” I can’t wait to see what they’ll do with “Red Dead Redemption 2.”
Scheduled release date: Fall 2017 (Rumored: October 20, 2017).
