Tom Cruise is in talks to play the hero in Universal’s upcoming modern day ‘Mummy’ movie, but this time this time the bandages will be binding a different monster than usual.
‘The Mummy,’ what is set as Universal’s groundbreaking project for its planned future monster movie slate, may have found its hero in Tom Cruise and rebooted female mummy in recent breakout actress Sofia Boutella (‘Kingsman: The Secret Service‘).
As previously reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the soon to be resurrected monster-flick will be featuring a female bandaged foe with a “unique” backstory. Director Alex Kurtzman and writer Jon Spaihts may very well have some more creatively modern twists in-store, but Universal has kept all confirmation on casting speculation under lock and key.
It seems to be Universal’s hope to rekindle its once smoldering catalogue of monster cinema, starting with ‘The Mummy.’ From there, the studio plans to launch a series of commingling monster movies with the intention of building a cohesive a cinematic universe. Universal has an untapped chasm of potential creature features to pull from like Dracula, the Invisible Man, Frankenstein and His Bride and the Nosferatu hunting Van Helsing.
With the seasoned box-office breaking charm of Cruise and the growing intrigue surrounding rising star Boutella, Universal may very well have the right recipe to launch their own cinematic universe. In a market increasingly dominated by superhero cinema, it will be a nice breath of stale 1,000 year old air to catch a good old monster movie on the big screen.
Universal’s ‘The Mummy’ is set to stagger into theaters March 24, 2017.
