TBT Review: ‘Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me’ is Weird Even For David Lynch
‘Twin Peaks’ has triumphantly returned to TV with Showtime and the response has been encouraging! The only problem is that I do not have a subscription for Showtime. I plan to get one, but not until the season concludes so I can watch it all in one sitting. About a year ago I watched the original “Twin Peaks” on Netflix and quickly understood why so many people loved it. So before I watch “The Return” I thought I’d get myself hyped while watching “Fire Walk With Me.”

For this Easter I thought we could take a look back at one of the most controversial films of all-time. Martin Scorsese’s “The Last Temptation of Christ”, not surprising as it is a film about Jesus and in this day-and-age that seems to go hand in hand. It’s based on an equally controversial book and has divided viewers for years. It begins as basically retelling of the story of Jesus just with a greater emphasis on his inner conflict and trying to show him as a human first, the son of God second.
Read MoreTBT Review: ‘Tucker and Dale vs Evil’ Is A New Classic
Like my “ParaNorman” review from last year, “Tucker and Dale vs Evil” may already have very good reviews but once again… they’re not good enough! Now right from the first trailer I thought this was a really clever idea for a film. I’ll link it here, but honestly I’m not sure if I should. It’s a good trailer but it’s one of those stories where it would be if you go in knowing NOTHING about it. However, you still have to market it and how do you do it without ruining the surprise without selling a totally different story. The simple answer is you can so if you haven’t seen it then I suggest you stop here. If you’ve already seen it or just aren’t sure then follow me down further as we get into the film. *Spoiler Warning.*

Normally with these throwback reviews I tend to go with something I really like, but here I decided to go in the opposite direction and review something I hate! As in it’s somewhere in my bottom 4 or 5 most hated films. Like “Exorcist II: The Heretic” it’s a film I not only hate on its own merits but also because it’s a sequel to an amazing first film that happens to be one of my favorites. Let’s get into why and see if there are any redeeming qualities. I’m going to refer to “The Fly” (1986) as the original for simplicity sake even though yes I know it’s a remake but the actual original Vincent Price film doesn’t have anything to do with this discussion so again let’s just keep it simple. Again for these older films Spoiler Warning.

The original “Cape Fear” from 1962 starred Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck (and ironically enough came out the same year as his iconic turn in“To Kill A Mockingbird”) was meant to be remade by Steven Spielberg. However, after working on the script for a while he decided he’d rather work on “Schindler’s List” but unfortunately the rights were owned by Martin Scorsese. Luckily for him Scorsese was willing to trade and threw himself into the scripting. Let’s see how it turned out and where it’s better or worse than the original.

“Re-Animator” is a modern-day Frankenstein and a bloody mess of a film that is entirely entertaining, still holding up in the year 2016.

“Comet” is a beautifully made film with awesome performances, an incredible love story, and a wonderful musical score to back it up. The film’s dialogue and character development make you fall in love with its universe in the first five minutes, keeping you locked-in for the entire ride. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll be surprised how a film that’s nearly 100% dialogue plucks your heartstrings. The story is told and filmed in an unconventional way that may take a few viewings to completely understand, but there’s no doubt in my mind that this is one of the best love stories to hit the silver screen, and I highly recommend it to everyone.

Even for completionists, there is little point to seeing this movie. There are some interesting ideas that show this COULD have possibly worked but it never truly went far enough. The film takes the things that didn’t work in the original and multiplies them while worsening other parts. See the original, it’s a classic! Skip this one unless you’re like me and always feel compelled to see obscure sequels.

Not Mel Brooks’ greatest or funniest film but it’s still darn good. The love and affection for “Star Wars” and all things science fiction shine through. While it may be a spoof that couldn’t have come into existence without “Star Wars” it does stand on its own. For many who watch the film, it is as prominent and loved as the trilogy itself. I give it 4 stars out of 5. May the schwartz be with you.
