Things are not looking good for a “Stargate” reboot.
Producer Dean Devlin recently commented on the status of the 1990s film “Stargate” getting the reboot treatment. After strong anticipation from fans, Devlin confirmed that the reboot is officially not happening.
“It looked good for a couple of months, but now it’s not looking so good. There are just a lot of things that have to fire at the same time, and there was a moment where I thought it was all firing at the same time, and then it all kind of fell apart.”
“Listen, I think if we did Stargate right, the fans would like it and we could do something really good. But if we screw it up, they’ll reject it. As they should. But I kind of don’t want to do it if I think that we’ll screw it up, and that’s one of the things that’s holding us back.”
Many are speculating that the poorly received “Independence Day: Resurgence” is to blame. Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin had committed to the “Stargate” reboot at the same time they announced an “Independence Day” sequel. The plan was for “Stargate” to be rebooted and then transition into a trilogy. They were to be joined by writers James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright who also penned the script for “Independence Day: Resurgence.”
Devlin doesn’t officially state “Resurgence” as the problem, but circumstances practically confirm it as the reason. The key players responsible for “Resurgence” would reprise their same roles in the making of a “Stargate” reboot. Most likely the studios were banking on the “Independence Day” sequel to be a success. With it not excelling at the box office nor gaining much critical acclaim, there would be no reason to let the team try again. Not only is this bad news for “Stargate” but also for 1990s films in general. Many key sci-fi films of this era have not been successful as reboots. Maybe they’ll give “Stargate” a chance after more time has passed.
