Sam Mendes says “this is probably it” for directing James Bond films.
When Daniel Craig took over the role of James Bond, he proved himself worthy with the release of “Casino Royale.” The film that followed, “Quantum of Solace,” was definitely bomb in the fans eyes and lead some to believe that hope was lost for this “Blonde Bond.” Then came along “American Beauty” Director Sam Mendes and he won the majority over with the third Daniel Craig film “Skyfall.” Fans were appeased and once it was announced he was doing the fourth film Spectre, fan excitement surged.
While many see Sam Mendes as a saving grace for the franchise, it turns out that “Spectre” may be his last film. According to BBC News, Mendes has already grown tired of doing Bond films and he doesn’t expect he’ll be back after “Spectre.”
“I said no to the last one and then ended up doing it, and was pilloried by all my friends,” he said. “But I do think this is probably it.”
“I don’t think I could go down that road again,” he said. “You do have to put everything else on hold.”
I LOVE Sam Mendes and credit his work on “Skyfall” as the revitalization of James Bond for our generation. Not to discredit Daniel Craig (who I also like) but Mendes is a director that knows how to capture the human spirit. While “probably” doesn’t mean “certainly” (they could just throw money at him), I feel that his departure could be bittersweet for the franchise.
“It feels almost, even though we’ve just finished shooting it, like one big experience and it was a fantastic life-changing thing,” he said. But he added he did not think he could go through it again.
“It really is more a lifestyle choice than a job,” he said.
Daniel Craig has also expressed interest in leaving the role of James Bond. Although it seems like he’s rather fresh, he’s already got four films to his name and at 47 years old many think his Bond is ready for retirement. If Sam Mendes leaves the franchise, it could create an opportunity to begin the transition for a new James Bond. Maybe Sony will begin to pursue Idris Elba to play Bond as it was previously leaked.
Aside from speculation, I would be sad to see Sam Mendes leave the Bond franchise. “Skyfall” was a complete masterpiece and I have high hopes for “Spectre” as well. Hopefully someone promising will be able to somewhat fill Sam Mendes’ shoes.
