The “Rings” trailer attempts to complete “The Ring” circle making the franchise a trilogy.
The trailer for “Rings” landed today bringing the popular franchise into modern times with an internet based presence. While the original film “The Ring” started with VHS tapes and the sequel explored the origin story, “Rings” seems to veer away from this rather inclusive approach by integrating the horror into technology which is part of our daily lives. Take a look at the trailer below.
The original film was an adaptation of the Japanese horror film similarly titled “Ringu.” “The Ring” captured much of the eerie feel of “Ringu” and while it had its differences, the essence of the original film was definitely there. And as it goes with American horror films, if one finds success, then a sequel is practically imminent. “The Ring Two” didn’t carry the “scare factor” of the first film but it still piqued interest with its backstory that gave us an origin for the unknown element in the first film. Now 10 years after the last film comes “Rings” which hopefully carries some substance.
At this point in the franchise, things could be rather diluted as far as story goes. The original film would no longer be applicable to this modern day generation as no one would watch a VHS tape (and some wouldn’t know what a VHS tape is). “Rings” is an opportunity to find appeal with younger audiences but also rope in those who cling to nostalgia. But it also could fall into the realm of unnecessary horror sequels.
