“Life on the Road” is a spinoff of the UK’s “The Office” starring Ricky Gervais.
While we’ve come to appreciate the lengthy 9 season run of the US version of “The Office,” the UK is where the show originated. Ricky Gervais was the Michael Scott of the original series known as David Brent. Despite a few appearances on the US version of “The Office” after the UK series had ended, many never thought they’d see David Brent again. Luckily for the fans of the original, the UK will be releasing a full feature length film to debut on August 19, 2016. Check out the teaser trailer below.
This is an interesting choice for a film in my opinion. The UK version of “The Office” was definitely popular but I find it difficult to believe it’s relevant enough to justify a film. Gervais is a very good writer but his films where he serves as the lead, have not done so well. Given that he is also a writer on “Life on the Road,” it may be able to stand the test of time and be a quality film but as of now, this generation may not know of David Brent. Gervais even jokes about this in the teaser when referencing the period in which the original series ran.
The film itself is set 12 years after the UK version of “The Office” and has the documentary crew following David Brent chasing his dream of becoming a rock star. As a traveling salesman, Brent hopes to finance this dream and promote his band, “Foregone Conclusion.”
