Tim Burton’s classic “Edward Scissorhands” returns for a 25th anniversary edition.
If you know the name Tim Burton then you’re probably aware of “Edward Scissorhands.” And if you’re a big fan of Tim Burton or just a cinephile, then the 25th anniversary edition of “Edward Scissorhands” may be something you would be in the market for.
In celebration of the 25th anniversary release of the film, I’ve decided to do a throwback review of “Edward Scissorhands” along with a summation of what you can expect from this special Blu-ray release of the film.
Cinematics (Plot, Acting, Cinematography, etc.) – 4.5
When it comes to filmmaking, “Edward Scissorhands” is a staple for comparison. It highlights the best aspects of Tim Burton as a director showcasing many of his now telltale elements of his films.
Burton is known for utilizing German expressionism throughout his films and “Edward Scissorhands” shows a well-executed use of this style. Through chiaroscuro lighting effects, Burton contrasts the light and dark aspects of this film both literally and metaphorically. While the happy suburban setting is shown through the vibrant, pastel colored neighborhood, Edward represents the dark element entering suburbia with dark colored attire and a gothic, dreary home.
What makes this film even more impressive is the use of practical effects to create such an ethereal world. While the set is primarily composed of bright houses, green grass, and clear skies, the large-scale views are actually small-scale models that integrate seamlessly with the set.
In addition to the world created for the characters, the actors attached to this film are all high caliber performers. Outside of the iconic Johnny Depp, the cast includes Dianne Wiest, Alan Arkin, Winona Ryder, and even Vincent Price. They each seem to get lost in these characters they portray as well as the world created for them.
Overall “Edward Scissorhands” is a testament to filmmaking. It blends fantasy and reality with its unique plot and interesting characters played by top notch actors. It takes many risks that end up paying off by giving us a cinematic fairy tale come to life on the big screen.
Entertainment Value – 4
It’s hard not to get lost in this suburban juxtaposition that is “Edward Scissorhands.” The contrasting colorful and gloomy backdrop paints the emotional tone of the film that can be told through visuals alone if necessary. In addition to the eye candy, there is a rich story filled with insightful metaphors, strong morals, and dynamic characters that will keep you engaged from beginning to end.
“Edward Scissorhands” is one of the iconic Tim Burton films and arguably one of his best. I would find it difficult for someone not to find entertainment in this eclectic tale.
Rewatchability – 3.5
It’s not a film I could watch daily, but every now and then it’s fun to go back and re-watch the journey of the quirky and skittish Edward. There is a lot to this film in regards to story, visuals, and characters. It’s nice to take a bit of a break from this film and then revisit it to relive the experiences again.
Blu-Ray Extras
There are some apparent features that come from the Blu-ray re-release of “Edward Scissorhands.” A remastered, high-definition version of the film optimized for Blu-ray, a digital copy of the film, and bonus features are a given.
What you might not expect is for the film to be optimized not only for Blu-ray but for 4K as well. There’s also a full feature commentary from both Tim Burton and Danny Elfman. In addition to that there is a featurette that gives perspectives from all of the stars of the film and Tim Burton. Finally there is an abundance of behind-the-scenes footage that will enlighten audiences as to how such a colorful film was made so long ago without the assistance of the technology we have today.
