While the summer months are usually the peak of the year in terms of box-office numbers, this year’s biggest month for movies will be November. As studios begin to realize movies can generate huge numbers outside of May, June and July (see the results for the top three domestic grossing films of the year “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Captain America: Winter Soldier,” and “The Lego Movie”) film fans will start to see a more even release schedule throughout the year.
Take this year’s November as an example. November boasts some of the most anticipated movies in several different movie genres. “Interstellar” (November 7th-science fiction), “Big Hero 6” (November 7th-family), “Dumber and Dumber To” (November 14th-comedy/sequel), “Foxcatcher” (November 14th-potential Oscar nominee), “Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1” (November21-franchise), and “Penguins of Madagascar” (November-26th-spin-off) all come out in the month of November.
Though the schedule may seem crowded, the films play to different audiences and tastes. In other words, November has the potential to out gross the month of May (which has grossed about $1.2 billion to date per Box Office Mojo). My three-year-old daughter already knows Baymax from “Big Hero 6” like he is her best friend and she laughs every time she seems a trailer for ‘Penguins of Madagascar’. I am extremely eager to see “Interstellar” (In Nolan We Trust), “Foxcatcher,” and “Dumber and Dumber To.” This means I will be trying to fit in a minimum of five visits to my local theater in order to satisfy my movie desires.
