NBC Sets Live Production of ‘A Few Good Men’ for 2017

NBC’s next live production is Aaron Sorkin’s “A Few Good Men.”

With the success of musicals like “Peter Pan Live!” and “The Sound of Music,” NBC hopes to capitalize on the Broadway success of Aaron Sorkin’s 1989 production of “A Few Good Men.” While Sorkin will return to the network to pen the project, there is no official release date set for its 2017 release.

Aaron Sorkin, the creator and mastermind behind NBC’s “The West Wing,” will return to the network for the project. He set a high mark in his professional debut, penning “A Few Good Men,” which premiered on Broadway in 1989 at the Music Box Theatre to critical acclaim. Three years later he adapted the play as a feature film that went on to receive an Oscar nomination for best picture.

Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will accompany Sorkin as executive producers to the project. In addition to “A Few Good Men,” they have served as executive producers for a majority of NBC’s live productions and are currently working on “Hairspray Live.”

So far these types of productions have been a ratings success. Bringing the Emmy winning Aaron Sorkin (who also happens to be the original writer) onboard should do nothing but help the ratings when “A Few Good Men” makes its debut.

The live production will be set in 1986 in Washington, D.C., with the focus being on military lawyer Lt. Daniel Kaffee. In the original film, Kaffee was portrayed by Tom Cruise who had one of the most iconic film exchanges in history alongside Jack Nicholson. The exchange of “I want the truth!” countered with Nicholson’s “You can’t handle the truth!” will surely be recognized in this live production for those who unfamiliar with the Broadway adaptation.
