Nathan Fillion Playing This Key Character in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’
Nathan Fillion may be quite the “wonder” in “Guardians of the Galaxy 2!”
Some candid photos from the “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” set in Atlanta, Georgia may have revealed a big role for our favorite “Firefly” star. Photos posted online revealed some potential spoilers for the upcoming film regarding a much larger role for Nathan Fillion. While he had a small cameo in the first “Guardians of the Galaxy” voicing the blue alien that Groot nasally invades, he may have been given a character upgrade for the sequel.
On set photos revealed a film festival (within the film) titled the “Simon Williams Film Festival.” For those who do not know, Simon Williams is the identity of the Avenger turned movie star, Wonder Man. So how does this conclude that Fillion is playing that character? Well, additional photos revealed movie posters for the films playing at the festival all of which bear Fillion’s face depicting him in the starring role. Take a look at the photos for yourself below.
Going along with the “Guardians of the Galaxy” humorous tone, these posters seem to be mocking some major motion pictures themselves. Of the lesser known mockeries, there are the films “Oh, Rebecca!” which portrays a stereotypical rom-com and then “Haxan 2” which seems to be a sequel to a 1922 Swedish-Danish silent film that would ironically never need a sequel. The laughter really starts to roll for the next three films though. “The Toxic Janitor 2” is parody sequel to the film “The Toxic Avenger,” “Arkon” is a clear mockery of “Conan” (yet also another Marvel character), and the funniest of all is “Tony Stark” which is a spot-on mockery of Steve Jobs.
In the comics Wonder Man was a former Avenger thought to be deceased but was later resurrected into the story when it was revealed he did not actually die…sort of. His brain patterns were saved saved electronically and we later saw his body in a comatose state. Years later he would be revived to become one of the founding members of the West Coast Avengers.
His powers primarily consist of strength and durability but he also has superior traits of speed, agility, and senses overall. In reference to the photos above, he also has experience as an actor and stuntman as he pursued a successful career in Hollywood.
Things may be going “Inception” level deep with this film within a film storyline, but many will rejoice to see Nathan Fillion finally get a superhero role that he deserves. He’s been a fan favorite for the role of Hal Jordan in “Green Lantern” for quite some time, but Wonder Man could become very popular given Fillion’s fanbase. Check out another set video below to see if you can spot more of Nathan Fillion scattered on set.
