Microsoft Announces Monthly Xbox Game Pass Service

Xbox announces a monthly gaming subscription for $9.99 per month.

With a selection of games stemming from both Xbox One and compatible Xbox 360 games, Microsoft has announced a new monthly gaming subscription starting Spring 2017. Xbox Live Gold members will be getting first dibs on the Xbox Game Pass, but it sounds like it should be available for those who do not have Gold as well.

“Today, we’re continuing our commitment to give you more options to diversify and expand your library of games with Xbox Game Pass, a new gaming subscription service coming later this spring. Xbox Game Pass gives you unlimited access to over 100 Xbox One and backward compatible Xbox 360 games – all for $9.99 per month.”

In addition to access to a large library of games, Xbox is also touting a discount for those that want to permanently own a product. A 20 percent discount will apply to all full game purchases and add-ons will receive a 10 percent discount. Much like their “Games with Gold” restrictions, the discount will only be applied while the game is currently in the monthly access library.

“Enjoy unlimited access to over one hundred great Xbox One and Xbox 360 titles, including fan-favorites like Halo 5: Guardians, Payday 2, NBA 2K16, and LEGO Batman. With so many games to download and discover, your Xbox experience will never be the same.”

I cannot help but wonder what will become of the free “Games with Gold” incentives once this service comes into play. Would it be less advantageous for Microsoft to provide free games to Xbox Live Gold members when they have a monthly service? Many have been pleased with the games available every month and I can’t help but wonder if the quality will diminish. I also wonder if the Xbox discounts will be less enticing since they are offering exclusive discounts with the Xbox Game Pass.
