Marvel Studios and Marvel Entertainment will no longer be working together on films!
In an unprecedented move, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has initiated a reorganization of the company. This reorganization will have him no longer reporting to Marvel Entertainment COO Ike Perlmutter when it comes to film decisions. Instead Feige will be directly reporting to Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn.
Just one year ago, Marvel Studios had officially moved onto the Disney lot so many are seeing this as a more strategic move to essentially “cut out the middle man.” Ike Perlmutter will still have a vested interest in television and other projects, but when it comes to film, Kevin Feige will be working directly with their owner Disney.
Many fans may worry about this restructuring but it is essentially no different than the situation that occurred when Disney took ownership of Lucasfilm. While we have yet to see a Star Wars film, Marvel has created quite a successful lineup under the direction of Kevin Feige and Ike Perlmutter. Feige has been known as the creative source behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far and it is being reported that he and Perlmutter may have actually had some difficulties working together. Alan Horn on the other hand has been reported as a more functional companion alongside Feige and the move is expected to ease the tension of the creative process for future films.
This seems as though it is nothing more than a matter of semantics as far as headlines are concerned. I expect that nothing will change from this move as we still have Kevin Feige behind the projects and Disney has officially owned Marvel Studios since 2009. In the end, this may be a better move for the creativity surrounding Marvel films if Perlmutter and Feige were continually butting heads.
How do you feel about this move? Do you think this will affect the future of Marvel films?
