Marisa Tomei as Spider-Man’s Aunt May? That’s what we’re hearing!
When you think of Spider-Man‘s Aunt May, you usually think elderly and of grandmother type figure. While Sally Field gave us the most youthful depiction of the character yet, it seems that Sony wants to dip into that fountain of youth once more. According to a Variety exclusive, Sony has given an offer to Marisa Tomei to play the role of Spider-Man’s favorite aunt.
Sources tell Variety that Marisa Tomei is the choice to play Aunt May in the next installment of the “Spider-Man” franchise.
Sony and Marvel had no comment on the casting.
While insiders could not say where things stood in the deal-making process, they have added that an offer was made late last week for the Oscar-winning actress to join Tom Holland, who was recently tapped to play the web-slinging superhero.
We knew that the next Spider-Man would be young when Tom Holland was cast for the part. What I didn’t expect was how youthful they would go with his Aunt May. I love Marisa Tomei and think that she is both talented and beautiful but I’m suddenly having some strange feelings towards this Aunt May which makes things a little awkward regarding this childhood character that I grew up knowing. It’s a bit weird for me to say that I might be having some “impure thoughts” when seeing Aunt May on the big screen in this next film…haha.
While it is being reported that she has been given an offer, we all know how these things could go. An offer doesn’t mean anything until the recipient accepts, and sometimes even that doesn’t matter. Just recently Ava DuVernay was offered the director’s chair for Black Panther and she declined. Marisa Tomei could easily do the same despite her being the first choice pick. But even if she isn’t chosen, this may have given us an idea of where they are taking the Spider-Man franchise.

It always seemed a little strange that Peter's aunt and uncle were so much older that he was. Almost seemed like they'd be maybe a great-aunt and great-uncle. So, I'm cool with this. I like the feistier, hipper versions of Aunt May that have been in Ultimate Spider-man (The comic and the cartoon).
Oh I do too, but I have to admit that there will be some confusion for me since I have a huge crush on Marisa Tomei haha.
Yeah, there'll definitely be some of the "I shouldn't be looking at Aunt May like this" moments from the comic book nerdcore.
