Margot Robbie may not have the signature “Mista J” accent we’d hoped for.
With Jared Leto cast as the Joker and Margot Robbie cast as his partner in crime Harley Quinn, many were excited. While the Joker may be the iconic role in the upcoming Suicide Squad film, Margot Robbie may have stolen the excitement spotlight being the first woman cast as Harley Quinn. With her performance in “The Wolf of Wall Street” many thought she would transition well into the role with similar New York accent, but according to Robbie from a SuperHeroHype.com interview, we may not get the classic accent we want from Quinn.
“None of those things have been set in stone at this point, but according to the comics, she’s from New York and I think Brooklyn, so there may be a slight… I couldn’t imagine it would be as strong as the Wolf of Wall Street accent,” she said. “The lingo will be the difference between that and the other character I played in ‘Wolf’ but I don’t know yet. We haven’t spoken about it.”
Now this is nothing set in stone but it is a disappointment to me and other fans if this is true. For Margot Robbie to say her accent wouldn’t even be as thick as her “Wolf of Wall Street” accent, that means we may have next to no accent at all. Harley Quinn is a rather fresh character in the Batman comics but she is a popular one. For every portrayal we’ve seen in of Quinn in animated films, cartoons, and even video games, she’s had an iconic accent that has been the identifying characteristic of her character.
While I’m not discrediting the film choices being made (as it could be a great film), I am very disappointed as a fan. Even if we got the Margot Robbie accent from “Wolf of Wall Street,” that would be more than enough to satiate the expectations of the fans. I’m sure that many of these actors can do great things with the characters they are portraying and maybe even set a standard for the future of some characters but the only Harley Quinn we’ve ever known has been based on vocal acting.
