Steven Avery’s new lawyer claims that new scientific testing can clear her client.
“Making a Murderer” is a Netflix docuseries that took the nation storm. Between murder, police corruption, testimonies, and mounds of evidence, the debate of Steven Avery’s innocence has been a constant debate. Now with a new lawyer taking Avery’s case, she claims that his innocence can be proven with scientific advancements in forensic testing. His lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, who made her first television appearance on Dateline NBC to explain her thoughts.
“Generally, since 2007, there have been significant advances in forensic testing,” Zellner told Dateline’s Andrea Canning. “Am I going to tell you exactly what it is? I am not. But it’s been a long time. There was a lot of evidence that wasn’t tested.”
That same Dateline episode was titled “Two Sides of the Steven Avery Case” and also included perspectives from the prosecution and Avery’s former defense. While the prosecution, Ken Kratz, remained adamant about Avery’s guilt, his former defense held their ground as well.
“Steven Avery’s guilty and deserves to be right where he is…” Kratz told Dateline.
One of Steven Avery’s former lawyers, Jerry Buting, still claims that the evidence presented in the case did not prove Avery’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
“From the evidence I’ve looked at I think he is innocent,” Buting told Dateline. “I think he certainly was not guilty beyond a reasonable doubt under the evidence that was presented.”
Despite Avery’s former and present lawyer standing firmly by their client’s innocence, Ken Kratz did not budge on his opinion or even entertain their thoughts.
“With any one of these facts, you can come up with a ‘what-if’ scenario,” he said. “But at some point this conspiracy theory collapses under its own weight.”
