A “MacGyver” film reboot is happening at Lionsgate!
After the success of the popular 1980s/1990s TV series, Lionsgate studios has confirmed a “MacGyver” film in the works. This news comes after the already planned remake of the original series from CBS, so this film could be supplemental to the success of their venture as well.
The announcement for the “MacGyver” film was announced by Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer during a financial call with industry analysts. He also confirmed that the movie would in fact be produced by the series creator Lee David Zlotoff and “The Fast and Furious” producer Neal Moritz. As far as other details go, nothing else was provided.
One can only speculate as to the correlations between the original series, the rebooted series, and this film. But as far as seeing Richard Dean Anderson (the original MacGyver) making a cameo in the film, I would bet on that happening as a way of passing the torch. But given the lack of details about this project, I’m not sure that we can make any assumptions, but an appearance from the original character would fall into the Hollywood reboot formula.
For those unfamiliar with “MacGyver,” it is a very popular and interesting series. Richard Dean Anderson played a secret agent named Angus MacGyver who worked for the Department of External Services. But while most secret agents carry an arsenal of guns and ammo, MacGyver’s arsenal was his mind supplemented by his Swiss Army knife. Rather than shooting his way out of tough situations, he would continually come up with an ingenious way of resolving issues without ever firing a weapon. In a way, he was like Batman without the mask.
The project currently has no set timeline nor any other names (other than the above) attached.
This was first reported by Variety.

"Thank you for saving our village, Mister MacGyver!"
The show was kinda a popcorn guilty pleasure. I would hope a movie would be along the same lines.
