The creative minds that dazzled SNL viewers with musical gems like “Jizz In My Pants” and “Dick In A Box” are back with full-length feature music-centric comedy ‘Popstar.’
My fans and me, we’re in love. The arena is our bedroom and the stage, the stage is where we F!@#. – Conner 4 Real
The Lonely Island, composed of Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer, is taking their musically oriented antics to the big screen for a Judd Apatow (‘Trainwreck,’ ‘Superbad’) produced and star-studded mockumentary featuring a Beiber-emulating Samberg as a seemingly detached pop-star at the pinnacle of his success and decadence. And judging by this Redband trailer, it looks f!@#ing hilarious!

Immediately, Samberg’s above-quoted opening dialogue sets the shamelessly crude and in your face tone of the film. What is also apparent is The Lonely Island signature self-produced and often Feat. heavy stylings, which are just as current and catchy as always. Samberg really hams it up as Conner 4 Real, a Pop/Hip-Hop savant, who according to a cameo appearance by Simon Cowell, is “actually saving the record industry.” ‘Popstar’ basks in the excesses and eccentricities of our modern class of tabloid friendly rockstars, celebrities and socialites. It also picks at the behind-the-scenes ecosystem required to prop-up the modern popstar, from ghost songwriters, to gimmicky DJs, to ignorant entourages of ‘Yes-Men’.
With cameos from real-life pop-stars like Usher, Adam Levine and Pink to actors and comedians like Sarah Silverman, Bill Hader and Tim Meadows, ‘Popstar’ is definitely well-equipped for success. The music sounds epic, still maintaining a cheese factor signature to The Lonely Island, and the jokes seem plentiful. While we will have to wait and see just how well this musical mockumentary gets woven together, and if it could become this generation’s ‘Spinal-Tap,’ we can enjoy this f!@#$ing funny @ss Redband trailer.
The Lonely Island’s ‘Popstar’ hits theaters June 3rd, 2016.
