Go Planet! That’s right, a “Captain Planet” movie is in the works.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way Productions and Paramount are in talks for a “Captain Planet” movie. Paramount is currently working on the rights to the 1990s cartoon series. In addition they have their eyes on two people to pen the film.
“Scream Queens” star Glen Powell and his writing partner Jono Matt may be lending their writing talents to the film if the deal is made. While Powell is known for his work in front of the camera, there is no word as to if he will have an acting role in the film.
For those unfamiliar with “Captain Planet,” it was a television series that aired from 1990 to 1992. The story revolved around a group of teens with elemental rings. They were constantly on missions to stop pollution and save the Earth. When they combined the powers of their rings, it summoned a superhuman being named Captain Planet.
Previously Sony had the rights to this project but those rights lapsed. What makes this Paramount/Appian Way Productions venture interesting is the supposed story. Instead of rebooting the series, this story would take place years after the cartoon series. Maybe this would be a way to better depict the impact of climate change in modern day. With Leonardo DiCaprio being an advocate for the environment, this film could be a very interesting way for him to further his movement for global change.
What do you think about a “Captain Planet” film? Are you excited?
