‘Kong: Skull Island’ Trailer Debuts At SDCC 2016

Godzilla may have the nickname of King of the Monsters, but King Kong is the true OG of all giant monsters.

Fans have debated on the two for years, one thing Godzilla has always had over Kong is the sheer number of movies that extend to modern times. Well it now looks as though we’ll have a new Kong film for this new era of movies. At this year’s Comic Con we got a debut trailer for “Kong: Skull Island” and if I may drop my professional objectiveness for a moment it LOOKS AWESOME!

We have here a reboot of the King Kong series, not in any way related to the Peter Jackson remake from 2005. That was made by Universal and this new film will be made by Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures. It also seems to not be a straight remake of the story but more of an origin that takes place in the 70s during the Vietnam War. There is even a bit of an “Apocalypse Now” vibe to the story. However, even more there is an unmistakeable King Kong (1976)” feeling to the trailer which as a fan of that film it really makes me happy. We don’t get a great look at Kong himself, but he seems to be walking on 2 feet more like the 1976 version and is much larger than we’ve seen him before. Fitting as the plan is to eventually have this Kong and the Legendary Picture’s Godzilla crossover in a remake of “King Kong vs Godzilla” and it looks as though they may be more evenly matched now. Heck from the backgrounds of the island it might be the same Hawaiian island used in the 76′ film.

This film was originally planned to star Michael Keaton and J. K. Simmons, but both had to drop out due to schedule conflicts. However judging from the trailer, the film looks as though it’s in good hands. Like the 2014 “Godzilla” film Warner Bros. has handed the directing duties over to a young independent director, Jordan Vogt-Roberts. Hopefully like Gareth Edwards this will pay off and lead to a promising career. The film is scheduled for release on March 10th 2017.

What do you think? Do you want to see this new version of King Kong?

Eric: Eric grew up with a simple childhood. At age 11 a six fingered man murdered his father in front of his eyes, while his mother died defending him from an attack from a sharptooth, then an evil toon dropped a piano from 15 stories onto his brother's head and then on top of all of that while on the job he was brutally shot up and left for dead but was rebuilt as a robotic cop to get his revenge. ...Oooorr maybe he just watched a lot of movies growing up and got really into them. From a young age Eric realized learning things like science, math, people's names etc. took some real effort but could easily remember practically all the dialog/plot details from a random movie he watched on tv years ago. He knew from a young age that he wanted to make movies and never strayed from that. Going to college to get an education in film production and working on movie sets whenever it can be fit into his schedule. Get him into a room full of people he doesn't know and over time you may eventually get him to open up but just mention some movies and he'll talk for hours, never afraid to (respectfully) argue with fellow movie nerds. Now he puts that love and energy toward writing for FilmFad.com.
