Kevin Smith is behind a new “Spawn” spinoff project for BBC America.
Set in Todd McFarlane’s world of “Spawn,” Kevin Smith will be developing a police procedural series titled “Sam & Twitch.” The series will be developed for BBC America and based off the characters created by Brian Michael Bendis.
“[Smith] is attached to write, direct and executive producer a series based on the Sam And Twitch comic book series for us,” BBC America president and general manager Sarah Barnett said. “They were originally introduced in Spawn, and it’s Todd McFarlane’s comic book series about these big-city homicide detectives who face a series of super grisly crimes that are connected to the occult. It’s kind of frightening and sort of gallows humor. It’s, again, procedural, but in a very modern, contemporary way. So each episode is closed ended, although there are certain character-serialized aspects to the storytelling.”
Kevin Smith is currently directing his second episode of The CW’s “Supergirl.” He previously directed two episodes of “The Flash” on the same network. More recently Smith has abandoned a few fan favorite projects. His third “Clerks” film and “Mallrats” TV series are no longer in the works after their already continual delay. For the time being, it seems like comic book television is the path Kevin Smith has chosen.
Todd McFarlane has also announced a “Spawn” project in the form of a feature film. Currently there is no word if Kevin Smith’s “Sam & Twitch” series will tie into Todd McFarlane’s planned project.
