Kevin Feige recently spoke with IGN regarding a few hypothetical situations for Marvel given the upcoming release of “Guardians of the Galaxy.” The questions surrounded speculation of the future of Marvel films and a team up of the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy. Here is what Kevin Feige had to say regarding that team up.
“Part of the fun of the comics is that could happen,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige tells IGN. “Any character could interact with any other character because they inhabit the same time period and the same universe. And certainly it is the inclusion of Thanos most specifically that is a declaration to audiences who are paying attention that this is connected to those other universes. Part of the fun is that it could happen someday. I don’t know when that would be. Or maybe I know and I’m not going to tell you!”
After addressing the definite possibility of a Avengers and Guardians team up, Kevin Feige was asked about the possibility of Marvel’s favorite Atlantean Namor having his own film. Given that Marvel Studios still has some ownership rights to work out, this is what Feige had to say regarding a standalone Namor film.
“Let’s put it this way – there are entanglements that make it less easy. There are older contracts that still involve other parties that mean we need to work things out before we move forward on it. As opposed to an Iron Man or any of the Avengers or any of the other Marvel characters where we could just put them in.”
Given that Thanos is being hinted at being a more centralized story in the Marvel film universe, I can definitely see multiple characters colliding. If Marvel continues the formula that they currently have in place, it is only a matter of time before all film intertwine in some way.
As far as Namor goes, I’ve seen these legal battles more than hinder production on the simplest of collaborations. There have been multiple talks about Sony and Marvel uniting to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Studios universe in some small way, but even the smallest collaborations have fallen through due to ownership rights. Unless they are adamantly pushing for a Namor film, I do not see Marvel Studios moving forward with Namor anytime soon.
