“Star Wars The Force Awakens” Director JJ Abrams claims his wife told him to calm down on the lens flare.
In a recent interview on the “Colbert Report”….erghhh….I mean “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” J.J. Abrams was questioned about more recent conversation regarding his wife. The question involved Abrams’ wife opinion on his use of lens flare in his films and her disapproval. Apparently the last straw for her was during “Star Trek: Into Darkness” when the lens flare overshadowed Alice Eve in a particularly emotional scene. After that, Abrams seems to have changed his opinion on his use of the effect.
Abrams has made quite a name for himself over the years. Being the director for both “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” is an incredible feat but it also puts one under the spotlight for scrutiny. Every director has a particular characteristic that people cite and J.J. Abrams’ lens flare is his signature trait, although it’s held in a negative light (see what I did there?).
For those unfamiliar with lens flare, it’s that bright, reflective scattered effect that is derived from one single focal point. Refer to the image above for an example. This has been a prevalent device used in many of Abrams’ films but personally it never took away from his films. He may cut back on the use of lens flare but regardless he is still a brilliant director that fans are currently praising.
With his name being held in such high regard, it seems like now was a better time than ever to address this long time issue and do so in a humorous way. After being the director behind one of the biggest films in the world, there’s nothing that can really stop him now.
