We almost had Hayden Christensen reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker in “The Force Awakens!”
While it seems like Disney would want to steer clear of any “Star Wars” prequel references, Hayden Christensen’s Anakin almost had a role in the film. When exploring a more recent art book for “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens,” it was revealed that Anakin Skywalker’s force ghost would appear and the idea seemed to be rather unique.
“When you light a candle, you also cast a shadow.’ That inspired me to propose, for the first time, that Anakin’s ghost could come back […] If we see Anakin Skywalker, because he does flow back and forth between Darth Vader and Anakin, let’s see him as a character with a dark and light side. The reason Luke is this whole new entity is because he was the first to acknowledge his own dark side — that it was not separate from him.”
This is an idea that is very intriguing as a Star Wars fan. If you do a search for “Gray Jedi” this would further explain the idea of embracing both the light and dark side of the force. This idea is hinted upon in the original trilogy with Luke Skywalker but in the Expanded Universe (which is no longer canon), Luke actually explores the dark side and finds a balance between the dark and the light.
Many fans may have complained about Hayden Christensen’s reprisal as Anakin, but the concept explained from the art book above would add an interesting dynamic to the “Star Wars” films. Of course things sound great on paper but it could have been poorly executed. Regardless of how solid this idea may have been or how close it was to implementation, fans still received a great film with “The Force Awakens.”
Do you think that Hayden Christensen could have successfully played the role of Anakin given a second chance?
