“Glee” and “Whiplash” star Melissa Benoist is CBS’s Supergirl!
Melissa Benoist is Supergirl according to The Hollywood Reporter. With her most prominent TV role being on Fox’s Glee, many may have not given her second thought when it comes to casting for Supergirl. But given the success of CW’s The Flash with former “Glee” star Grant Gustin, Melissa Benoist may prove herself as a strong female lead.
Keep in mind that strength is only part of the role in CBS’ “Supergirl.” Instead of having an all around strong female character, they’re looking to create a character with the same duality as Superman and Clark Kent.
Now 24, Kara feels un-empowered, a slave to having repressed her innate abilities. She’s still pretty, but with her face hidden behind glasses and her hair pulled back, she doesn’t know it herself.
I’m sure that many think of “Smallville’s” Laura Vandervoot as a means for comparison when it comes to Supergirl. The difference between her character and CBS’ character is that both Vandervoot’s public and secret identities embodied confidence. It sounds as if CBS’s “Supergirl” will explore a side of Supergirl that can very much be compared to Melissa Benoist’s character Marley on “Glee.” The question is, what will we get from CBS? Will we get more of Kara or more of Supergirl? Maybe their choice of Melissa Benoist says something about their plans for the show.
