Paramount’s “Galaxy Quest” is being made into a television show!
Remember that Star Trek spoof called “Galaxy Quest” with Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver? While it wasn’t box office success, it resonated loudly with fans and became an instant cult classic. Because of the “fandomonium” surrounding the film, Parmount is shopping the film around to get a television series going. According to Variety, many of the original team members that made the film, will be included in this series development.
Paramount Television is shopping a TV spin on the 1999 comedy “Galaxy Quest,” a spoof of the sci-fi TV show that starred Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver
Robert Gordon, who co-wrote the DreamWorks feature with David Howard, is in negotiations to work on the TV adaptation, as are original director Dean Parisot and executive producers Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein.
“Galaxy Quest” coming to television? I think that’s the perfect place for it. The film generated enough buzz to deserve some sort of continuation but the studios would be very reluctant to green light a theatrical sequel given the first film’s numbers. As a television series it can grab from the “Trekkie” pot that loves their “Star Trek” and also acquire some new viewers with its satire and comedic take on space exploration.
What is still yet to be determined is whether or not Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, and Alan Rickman will reprise their roles. Tim Allen may have a somewhat free schedule but Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver still have some major motion pictures in the works. Even if they could just grab Tim Allen to reprise his “Galaxy Quest” role, that would be a mutually beneficial move for both he and the series as a whole. But if they have to recast the star and the majority of the series then it will be less recognizable and may not carry the success it deserves.
