4. Mad Max: Fury Road

4. Mad Max: Fury Road

Reboots and sequels are continuously happening in Hollywood. While many satisfy, few have established themselves as superior to their predecessor. When George Miller, the original “Mad Max” director, came forth to breathe life into the franchise he succeeded in an exceptional way with “Fury Road.” As an “old school” director with nostalgic flair for practical effects, George Miller created a seamless blend of CGI and practicality in this film. Mad Max: Fury Road took risks that other films were not taking. In addition to the practical effects and stuntwork, Miller focused on center framing which was a risk as a filmmaker but paid off greatly with the acclaim that followed. “Mad Max: Fury Road” may be a film that is a basis for study for future filmmakers.

3. Ex-Machina

3. Ex-Machina

People may think of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens when you mention Domnhall Gleeson or Oscar Isaac, but hopefully they remember this other film they did together. Ex-Machina was film that didn’t have a blockbuster marketing budget so it might have slipped under your radar. If it had slipped under my radar, I would have been greatly disappointed. In addition to highlighting the range of the two actors mentioned above, it also brought Alicia Vikander into the spotlight. The performances were superb but the story, theme, and setting are what carried this film. The unique plot also carries a bit of social significance due to its questioning of science and Artificial Intelligence. “Ex-Machina” is thought provoking and surprisingly visually captivating regardless of the confined setting. It was one of the best surprises of 2015 and a very enjoyable, heart-pounding experience.

2. Room

2. Room

Character development is a virtue of this film and this virtue runs emotionally strong throughout. I became attached to these characters quickly and this adapted story continually tugs at your heartstrings due to this attachment. Room is an emotionally enriching experience and probably the most emotionally enlightening film of the year. It’s a potential Best Picture nominee and in my opinion it should be a Best Actress win for Brie Larson. I’ve seen a majority of the other potential Best Picture nominees but “Room” is the film that stood out for me as my personal winner as far as the Oscars go. It’s creative, engaging, brilliantly shot, and definitely deserves the attention that is sure to come during awards season.

1. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

1. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

I admit that there is a bias for putting “The Force Awakens” at the top of my list. I’m a huge Star Wars fan so seeing a (good) “Star Wars” film in theaters during its premiere was a milestone experience for me. While my “Star Wars” fanboy side may establish a bias, it also made me more critical than most during this film. Cinematically it wasn’t the greatest film of 2015 but as a “Star Wars” film, it put the franchise back on track for greatness and gave a majority of fans exactly what they wanted. There will be a number of films to make the Oscar Best Picture nomination list and “The Force Awakens” won’t be on there. But 25 years from now when everyone’s struggling to remember who won the 2015 Best Picture, they sure won’t forget this film. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is more than the best picture of 2015, it is a iconic, cinematic experience that has made its mark on history.

4. Circle

4. Circle

Circle brings a unique idea and social commentary to screen with a refreshingly new, yet murderous, tale of fifty strangers whittled down to one in a game of survival. Showing the true power of a good film, this indy treat has made serious waves on Netflix even contending with many of the mainstream releases.

3. Ex-Machina

3. Ex-Machina

Coming in snugly behind that is Alex Garland’s artistic directorial debut with the cerebral science fiction thriller “Ex Machina.” Garland paints a unique and gripping picture of the future of artificial intelligence with a small yet highly talented ensemble cast consisting of Oscar Issac, Domhall Gleeson and Alicia Vikander. Garland’s unique vision breathes life into what was perhaps the best science fiction film of the year.

2. Straight Outta Compton

2. Straight Outta Compton

Perhaps the best dramatic film experience, and likely a strong contender for the Best Picture Academy Award, is the Gritty NWA story brought to screen in Straight Outta Compton. With fantastic acting, excellent music, precise direction and a provocative subject matter, “Straight Outta Compton” is a crown jewel of the 2015 film catalogue as it brings to life the real-life story of Hip-Hop legends Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and Easy E.

1. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

1. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

Last, but certainly not least, on my list is of course is “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” J.J. Abrams aptly re-ignites fan interest and enthusiasm, bringing the original Star Wars retro feel back to screen with a modern twist. After a decade of disappointment with the prequel films, Disney and Abrams managed to find the right mix of talent, story and nostalgia to kick-off a more anticipated and appreciated installment. We find the original cast joined by newcomers Oscar, Domhall Gleeson, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver for what is undoubtably the BIGGEST movie of 2015. Add a billion dollar gross at the global box-office to the adulating experience and it goes without saying that critics will be waiting to see what new director Rian Johnson will do with “Episode VIII” come 2017.

4. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

4. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

Worth the wait in every single way. There are issues to be sure but much like the original trilogy what’s good is so good that it makes you not care about what doesn’t. It does the unthinkable and revitalizes the franchise that was once thought dead with a perfect balance of nostalgia and great new characters.

3. Ex-Machina

3. Ex-Machina

One of the most original ideas for a sci-fi film this proves that with a strong enough concept you don’t need a ton of CGI lasers and aliens to hold an audience’s attention. At times creepy and at other times exciting and romantic, the film keeps you guessing what it will truly be about until the unforgettable ending.

2. Inside Out

2. Inside Out

Pixar’s best film which is unbelievable praise. It’s fitting that a film that stars the emotional spectrum takes the audience through it. Inside Out never lets its status as a children’s film hold it back from diluting its message or consequences for the characters.

1. Spotlight

1. Spotlight

An old-fashioned drama about one of the toughest bits of news from our recent past. An amazing cast lead by one of the best new directors make this a must see for anyone. Don’t be shocked if you keep hearing this film’s title come award season. Some may call it Oscar bait but it is worth the hype.

2015 was actually a lackluster year for me seeing the latest films. Dealing with school and with the ticket prices being so high, I really didn’t get the chance to head to the theaters too much in 2015. That all will change in 2016; I promise you that, but for now, here are my Top 4 favorite films of the year.

4. Dope

4. Dope

“Dope” was a snappy, well-written tale of a teenager, obsessed with 1990s hip-hop, who ends up becoming a successful drug dealer in the end. The film paid homage to several films from the 1990s, including one of my favorites, “The Wood.” I liked this film because of the protagonist’s journey and the script was fresh and fun. It’s not something I’d go out and buy on Blu-ray or give someone as a gift, but it’s perfect if you need a few hours of laughs and good storytelling.

3. Straight Outta Compton

3. Straight Outta Compton

As a fan of the album and someone who loves old school hip-hop, I truly enjoyed watching this film. I’m not the biggest advocate for the classic biopic storytelling structure, but it was awesome to see the stories of some artists I grew up with. Jason Mitchell’s performance was phenomenal, in my opinion, and I’m a little upset he wasn’t nominated for a Golden Globe, but the Oscars are still right around the corner. I do recommend everybody does see this at some point. You might get a little annoyed with some of the corny and ill-delivered dialogue, but the story’s themes and subjects are ones that should be recognized and understood by all generations in this day and age.

2. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

2. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

I’m like every other kid that grew up in the 90s: My parents showed me “Star Wars.” I fell in love. I saw the “Special Editions” two-times each in the theaters. I strongly anticipated the Prequel Trilogy. I strongly hated the Prequel Trilogy.

“The Force Awakens” was the “Star Wars” film we all deserved a long time ago. It was a solid story full of new and old characters, and it left us with plenty of room for the next two episodes. The only complaint I have about the film is Kylo Ren taking off his helmet so early in the trilogy. There’s probably a reason they did this and we haven’t seen it yet, but regardless of my complaint, the film is worth the $12 it costs to go to the theaters.

1. Spy

1. Spy

I was pleasantly surprised with “Spy,” and I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone. It’s funny, action-packed, nostalgic, smart, and witty. You’ll be laughing from the first minute until the very last scene, and the best part is that Melisa McCarthy gets to TRULY show her acting chops in this one. She has found a niche as the “Ugly, Big Tomboy” that uses crude humor for cheap laughs. That was funny, to be honest, but only for the first couple of films, then it just got annoying. In this her character is sympathetic, innocent and headstrong, creating a nice change in McCarthy’s career outside CBS’ “Mike & Molly.” She leads you on a satisfying journey, all ending with a rather random cameo by 50 Cent (which made me roll my eyes). Regardless of that, “Spy” has been nominated for two Golden Globes: Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actress – Musical or Comedy for Melissa McCarthy. It also deserves a nod for its screenplay, yet we can’t get everything we deserve these days. Check this one out and you won’t be disappointed.
