Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it would seem that The Fantastic Four won’t be returning to Marvel any time soon.
After all this time fans were hoping that Fantastic Four might follow in Spider-Man’s footsteps and find its way back to Marvel to join the MCU. Kevin Feige has been quoted as saying they have “no plans with the Fantastic Four right now. No discussions about it.” This does indeed line up with statements he made before about FOX and Marvel making a compromise like with Sony. Although I would also remind you that Sony and Marvel did keep denying anything was happening between them until they were ready to make the official announcement.
Sadly for now our collective dreams of a Hulk vs Thing fight onscreen are dashed for now. This is particularly infuriating since this comes after the failure of 2015’s “Fant4stic.” You may not remember, but they were heavily banking on Josh Trank’s film to be a hit. It was stated that it was going to be in the same universe as FOX’s X-Men franchise. They even had the cast of “Fant4stic” appear in a photo shoot with the rest of the X-Men franchise actors for Entertainment Weekly. Although they did change that stance sometime before the film was released. The reasoning from Simon Kinberg being that if the Fantastic Four exist in the same universe as mutants and the X-Men then they’re not really all that fantastic. And yet they STILL didn’t even have the name of Fantastic Four ever appear in the film proper.
That may seem like an unimportant rant, but what I was hoping to illustrate with that paragraph is how much FOX doesn’t seem to get “Fantastic Four” despite having made 3 movies on it now. Want some more salt in the wound? The Roger Corman version that was never meant to be released is STILL widely considered to be the best version. I don’t think I need to still explain why so many fans want Marvel to take back control after all of that. Still Feige still seemed SOMEWHAT optimistic when he said last fall, “So, no plans beyond that for the few remaining characters that aren’t already in the MCU but never say never. Who knows what can happen in the future?” Have faith true believers, remember that they completely finished writing “Captain America: Civil War” before they knew they had Spider-Man back.
