Disney is developing a live action version of “Mulan!”
With Cinderella recently arriving with ample success and the upcoming Beauty and the Beast film, it’s no surprise that Disney is planning live action version of “Mulan.” According to the Hollywood Reporter, Disney has been eyeing this project due to the success of “Cinderella” and “Maleficent” which have paved the way for strong female leads in this genre of Disney films.
On the heels of the magical success of Disney’s live-action Cinderella, the studio is eyeing another live-action retelling: Mulan.
“Mulan” is a classic tale that is older than Disney’s existence and is probably the most significant story in regards to women’s independence. The story focuses on the segregation of duties in ancient Japan due to sex. Mulan, wanting to enlist, poses as a man to prove she is just as capable as any man on the battlefield. Not only does she prove that she is capable, she also proves that she is superior to many male soldiers and surprises them upon discovering her sex.
Interestingly enough, the hit television series “Once Upon a Time” has featured a live action version of Mulan played by Big Hero 6 star Jamie Chung. While it is unlikely that they will take a character that has already been established on TV, they may be more likely to consider her for the role given her popularity in “Big Hero 6.”
Whatever Disney may decide, right now the route they are going is a proven money maker. While “Mulan” may be a more recent Disney story, the popularity surrounding the animated film should be big enough to sustain profitability for the upcoming film.
