From the mind of Roald Dahl comes Disney’s trailer for “The BFG.”
While “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is Roald Dahl’s pinnacle of children’s novel fame, “The BFG” has become a highly anticipate follow up when it comes to film adaptations. Today Disney premiered the trailer for “The BFG” (aka “Big Friendly Giant”) carrying the magic of that only they could bring. Take a look at the magical trailer below.
Just coming off of an Oscar win, Mark Rylance lends his voice to the role of the BFG accompanied by British actress Rebecca Hall as Mary and newcomer Ruby Barnhill as Sophie. Bill Hader also lends his voice to the film along with “Flight of the Conchords” star Jemaine Clement.
The original novel tells the tale of a young orphan girl taken from the orphanage to a far off land filled with giants. The giant that takes has benevolent intentions doing so in order to appease the girl’s loneliness.
While this film adaptation may garner a lot of attention due to its larger budget and live action roles, it is not the first to make this attempt. Just 7 years after Dahl’s book was published (1982), an animated film of the same title was released in 1989. This was not highly distributed but it did correlate very well with the story told in the novel.
This live action version (with a lot of CGI) should give many fans of Roald Dahl what they truly desire. Not only is Disney behind the project, the film also has Steven Spielberg directing. With a company like Disney and a name like Spielberg, it’s easy to see that “The BFG” has a strong backing.
The film is slated for release on July 1, 2016 and will be launched in the UK on July 22, 2016.
