After a successful Oscar run, release dates were announced for the Blu-Ray and 4K Ultra versions of “The Revenant.”
“The Revenant” saw a lot of success at the Oscars with big wins for both the lead actor, Leonardo DiCaprio, and the director, Alejandro González Iñárritu. And with those big wins came some big announcements regarding the future release dates of the film for everyone to own.
With the emergence of the 4K Ultra format comes a new format of Blu-Ray and “The Revenant” will be one of those films on the shortlist to receive that special treatment. On March 22, 2016 “The Revenant” will be released on digital formats and Blu-Ray and 4K Ultra HD. And on April 19, 2016 the film will be released on standard DVD formats.
Why is this important? Well Blu-Ray formats are essentially being “upgraded” to a new format to account for the surge of 4K televisions. Blu-Rays are currently not capable of reaching a film’s visual potential with their limited resolution so these new 4K formats will be the way of the future much like the transition of DVDs to Blu-Rays.
“The Revenant” will join the list of other films getting the 4K treatment but will be on one of the first waves to be featured in the Ultra HD collection.
