The recent “Alien: Covenant” cast photo now has context.
This may be better than the trailer! As an official prologue to “Alien: Covenant,” and ironically titled “The Last Supper,” we finally get a hint at who these characters are. While James Franco may be the ship’s captain, it’s Danny McBride that is the spotlight of this teaser. Carrying his signature McBride arrogance, we get to see how his personality fits into this film that is far from a comedy. Check out the prologue clip below.
The casual, upbeat vibe of the pre-mission departure is signature to many of the “Alien” films. It’s a way of getting to know the characters before the film takes a dive into the suspense of survival. In this case we see tensions already rising between Danny McBride and Billy Crudup’s characters. Their roles seemingly play towards their usual strengths as actors which are also on opposite ends of the spectrum. This should make the supposed angst easily conveyed.
There’s also a few hidden clues in the dialogue and title. The Xenomorphs seem to be known by rumor based on their description as “giant roaches.” It raises the question of how the rumors made their way back to them and where else the creatures may have spawned since “Prometheus.”
Finally, the title of this prologue seems to follow suit with the religious undertones of “Prometheus.” The title of “The Last Supper” is mostly likely symbolic of Christianity and Jesus’ last meal before crucifixion. Like “Prometheus,” “Alien: Covenant” may not explicitly state the film’s religious ties, but Director Ridley Scott has established the connection in previous interviews.
“Alien: Covenant” hits theaters on May 19, 2017.
