CBS’ Supergirl leaks online 6 months early!

Supergirl Melissa Benoist

“Supergirl” leaks online to many piracy sites!

Just recently the 6 minute trailer of Supergirl was released and stirred up some controversy. Surprisingly enough with the show being about 6 months out and the trailer just being released, Variety reported today that the first episode of the “Supergirl” series starring Melissa Benoist has been leaked online. While studios are refusing to comment and probably doing their best to maintain damage control, it’s hard to stop the spread of the internet and the dreaded bay of pirates.

The first copies appeared shortly before 3 a.m. ET Friday, according to the firm. As of about 9:30 a.m. ET, the “Supergirl” pilot had been downloaded more than 120,000 times worldwide, per Excipio.

So what does this mean for the upcoming series? Will “Supergirl” ratings be hurt by the slew of downloads? Well in today’s internet age, this surprisingly doesn’t always mean defeat. It’s not as detrimental to have a show or film leaked online with the term “viral” now dictating market success. The internet has started to takeover the television and film market with services like Netflix and Hulu being accredited with those referring to themselves as “cable cutters.” It’s been turned into a marketing machine that is now saturated with ads everywhere even before all of your favorite online video originals. So while the leak could be bad for CBS, it could also build a market for the show that they hadn’t anticipated.

It’s rare for a pilot for a new TV show to leak out onto piracy sites — especially so far in advance of the premiere date. On the one hand, the early leak of “Supergirl” could put a damper on initial ratings. However, it could also serve to drive audience to the show and build buzz leading up to the fall season.

While we don’t know the fate of the show please keep in mind that many people spent their time on creating this show just like any other creative work of art. We do not condone piracy at Film Fad and while you think you may be doing something hurting studio “big wigs,” it’s also hurting the average paid talents behind the show like writers, artists, and cameramen. If you are one of those that do seek out the show to illegally download, then please be courteous enough to tune in to the first episode when it premieres on CBS.

What do you think of the “Supergirl” leak? Will this hurt or help the series? Was it an intentional marketing ploy?
