Batgirl Movie: Joss Whedon Set To Direct Standalone Film
Joss Whedon is about to direct DC’s Batgirl movie!
Once Marvel’s saving grace with “The Avengers,” Director Joss Whedon has switched sides. Currently he is in the final stages to direct a standalone Batgirl movie that will extend the DC expanded universe.
“Whedon is nearing a deal to write, direct, and produce an untitled Batgirl pic for Warner Bros. as part of its DC Extended Universe.”
With Wonder Woman being the first standalone, woman-led film, the Batgirl project will be the second in the DCEU. This gives DC two women in the superhero spotlight while Marvel still seems to be very male-driven.
Batgirl originally debuted in the comics in 1967 as the daughter of Commissioner Gordon, Barbara. With J.K. Simmons being introduced as Jim Gordon in the upcoming Justice League movie, it will be interesting to see if Barbara Gordon makes an appearance or if we will be waiting for “The Batman.”
As for Joss Whedon, DC could not have acquired a better choice to direct this film. With the recent anniversary of “Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” we all received a nostalgic reminder of what Joss Whedon is capable of with female-led superheroes. While “Buffy” was his most notable, female-driven creation, the director has consistently showcased his abilities to demonstrate hero equality between women and men. Other projects like “Dollhouse” featured Eliza Dushku as the lead hero while other popular shows like “Angel” and “Firefly” leveled the gender playing field despite having male leads.
As of now, there are no others attached to this Batgirl film as details were just finalized last month.
