Studio Ghibli’s New Film “The Red Turtle” Announced
New feature length-film by Studio Ghibli, that’s all you need to know to be excited but there is more information.
First it will be call “The Red Turtle” and is fascinatingly enough directed not by one of the studio’s own, but by an outsider. The dutch director Michaël Dudok de Wit who previously directed the 2000 Oscar-winning short “Father and Daughter” has teamed up with Studio Ghibli to bring us a new film. It’s about a man lost on a deserted island trying to escape until meeting a red turtle and woman (who might be the same from the trailer) and the life he forms. I know it sounds like I’m a little unsure and that’s only because I am as the trailer like the film is practically dialog free.
It may be a drastically different looking style, but it’s still damn beautiful.
This is interesting as Studio Ghibli like Japan in general tends to work by itself. Now it has its latest film directed by a foreign director and is a co-production with France. Studio Ghibli has been going through some rough times as of late. If you saw the documentary “The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness” then you already know this as a primary emotion you got from that was an uncertain sadness about the future. You will have to decide for yourself if this is a good sign that they can’t be kept down or more of a reminder that they are fading and partnering with anyone to help them stay afloat just a little longer.
Fans of Studio Ghibli and master Hayao Miyazaki probably shouldn’t worry as it was he who sought out Dudok specifically as director. Needless to say I particularly trust Miyazaki’s judgement. The film has no set date for release in North America as of yet but is out in France and won’t be coming out in Japan until the 17th of September.
