Bryan Singer May Be Taking X-Men to Outer Space
The X-Men may be headed to outer space in their next film.
Bryan Singer recently disclosed that the X-Men film following “X-Men: Apocalypse” will be set in the 1990s. While that seemed obvious enough given the timeline of the upcoming and previous film, Singer more recently revealed that he wants to introduce an alien element. Supplementing that reveal, he led us to believe that we’d have a change of setting for the team by bringing them to outer space.
“Another thing that’s been introduced in the comics is a big alien, interstellar tenant within the X-Men universe that hasn’t been explored. And to me, that might be kind of fun because I’m a huge Star Wars and Star Trek fan, and exploring the X-Men universe and being able to utilize that would be exciting, visually.”
In the X-Men comic books, the outer space element created one of the most iconic story arcs for the X-Men. It was the dawn of the Phoenix saga where Jean Grey dies and is resurrected as the Phoenix. We saw this story touched on in “X-Men: The Last Stand” but it only scraped the surface. In the film following “X-Men: Apocalypse” we could see this story further explored and an introduction to other prominent alien races as well.
While there are many elements that could be explored bringing the X-Men to space, Bryan Singer tends to take his own “creative liberties” with his films. We may be introduced to some new characters but as a comic book reader, I wouldn’t rely heavily on the source material to predict how the film will be laid out. At this point with the retconned universe, just about anything is possible with the direction of future films.
