What Genres Quentin Tarantino Still Wants To Do

Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” has been tearing up the box office and critical reviews.

(BTW if you haven’t seen the movie… you should, it’s really good!) Like almost all of Tarantino’s films this was highly anticipated. After all he is one of the most respected filmmakers of our time. The trailers even loudly announced that this was his 8th movie. Always very open about what projects he’s interested in pursuing, in an interview he mentioned what genres he wanted to tackle next.

“There is not a genre left where I have the same burning desire that I had to do a World War II movie (“Inglourious Basterds”) or a martial-arts movie (“Kill Bill”). I think maybe the one genre left might be a 1930s gangster movie, that kind of John Dillinger thing… I’m also interested in doing something contemporary, where I can have a character who gets in a car, turns on the radio so I can have a cool driving montage. If I had all the time in the world, I would love to make a really, really scary horror film like “The Exorcist.””

Tarantino has mentioned many times before that after his tenth film, he plans to retire. There’s no telling which ones he will eventually pick. The 30’s gangster film seems likely and could be a nice way to bring his career full circle as his earlier films “Reservoir Dogs” and “Pulp Fiction” are considered essentials of the crime genre. Something contemporary would be interesting to see if he could make it through an entire film without any sort of retro aesthetic to it. The horror film is the most interesting option to me personally. Yes he did make “Death Proof” but I wouldn’t consider it a horror film, so I think it would be the most unique. Especially since he’d most likely take an old-fashioned approach with the horror film which for me tends to be the kind of modern horror films that I generally like the most.
