Stallone Hints Apollo and Rocky Reunion in ‘Creed’ Sequel
Get ready for an Apollo/Rocky reunion in “Creed 2!”
According to Sylvester Stallone, a sequel to the “Rocky” spinoff film “Creed” will happen and there will be a surprise reunion. Even though his character died in “Rocky IV,” Sylvester Stallone plans to figuratively bring Apollo Creed back from the dead for the sequel to “Creed” which will star Michael B. Jordan.
“Ryan [Coogler] has some ideas of going forward and backward and actually seeing Rocky and Apollo together,” Stallone revealed. “Think of ‘The Godfather 2.’ That’s what he was thinking of, which was kind of ambitious.”
While the idea may be a bit ambitious, the sequel may have a few hiccups with reacquiring Ryan Coogler to direct the film. Sylvester Stallone is key on timing with the “Creed” sequel and doesn’t want to miss the window of opportunity while the film is still fresh in viewers’ minds. Coogler is said to have a few other upcoming projects but if he cannot do “Creed,” Stallone is maintaining the mentality of “the show must go on.”
“I know Ryan is probably going to be gone for a couple years,” Stallone says. “So there will be a quandary on: Do we work with another director and have Ryan produce, or do we wait? There’s a diminishing time acceptance of a sequel. Now they are cranking them out in a year.”
The idea of reintroducing Carl Weathers into the franchise for a “Godfather II” type scenario seems like it would have its flaws. The Apollo flashbacks they are referring to would feel a bit out of place with two aged actors playing the parts. Carl Weathers’ character died in 1985 and I doubt that 30 years of aging can be fixed with any sort of makeup or CGI without looking awkward. If they move forward with this idea, I’ll be more interested in seeing the implementation rather than the outcome.
What do you think of Sylvester Stallone bringing back Carl Weathers to play Apollo?
