Horror Film Visionary Wes Craven Dies at 76

Wes-Craven

“A Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Scream” creator Wes Craven died Sunday August 30, 2015.

When it comes to the horror genre, Wes Craven is a name that frequently comes to mind. Unfortunately that name will now be spoken of in a posthumous fashion.

At the age of 76, Wes Craven finally lost his battle with brain cancer this Sunday. He died at his home in Los Angeles and is survived by his wife former Disney Studios VP Iya Labunka.

For those unfamiliar with Wes Craven or his work, there are traces of it all throughout the horror genre. If you didn’t know the films “Scream” or “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” you have most likely watched a horror film inspired by Wes Craven. His creations are responsible for the re-invention of the youth and teen horror genre that we know today. He was known as someone who continually referenced other horror movies but through them he created a genre of his own and breathed life into the classic formula.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

“A Nightmare on Elm Street” is probably what many remember him for, but with the creation of that film and the character Freddy Krueger, he created a pinnacle hit that remains a staple in the genre. His other films include “The Hills Have Eyes,” “The Last House on the Left,” and “Scream” to name a few. Many of these spawned numerous sequels and reboots which have solidified Craven’s name in the horror community.

At 76, he has lived a life with a long and lustrous career which many would consider to be more than fulfilling with his contributions to cinema. While he may be survived by his family and friends, he will also be survived by the iconic characters and films that he has created. He will remain a legend long after this day and he will be missed.
