10 Game of Thrones Stars in Blockbuster Films
Aidan Gillen – The Dark Knight Rises
The most manipulative and charismatic character in “Game of Thrones” has to be Little Finger aka Lord Baelish. While he’s not the most menacing with the sword, he is definitely the most menacing with his tongue. Outside of “Game of Thrones” he had a minor role as a CIA Operative in The Dark Knight Rises.
Officially Gillen was the first person to capture Bane, even though it was a setup. Aidan Gillen seemed to draw more from his character in the HBO series The Wire than his character on “Game of Thrones.” His cocky nature as a CIA Operative created an ego that ended up being his downfall when Bane ended up eliminating him very quickly at the beginning of the film. Because of this, Gillen’s character seemed to leave the film as quickly as he entered. If you didn’t look closely, you may have not even noticed that “Little Finger” was in the film.
Jack Gleeson – Batman Begins
Even though he is a child Joffrey Baratheon aka King Joffrey may be the cruelest of the kings in “Game of Thrones.” With such ruthless cruelty, it’s hard to imagine him as an innocent child that would need saving. He was just that in the Christopher Nolan film “Batman Begins.”
While the role was minor, Jack Gleeson was the small boy that idolized Batman and was also a victim of the Scarecrow’s fear gas. He appeared twice throughout the film, once as the kid that Batman throws his grappling gun to and once as the child that Rachel Dawes saves from the Scarecrow. Gleeson was so young in this film that he would go unnoticed if it were not for the for the recognizable blue eyes and blonde hair that were signature attributes of King Joffrey.
Gwendoline Christie – Star Wars: The Force Awakens
As Brienne of Tarth, Gwendoline Christie was the only woman to change Jaime Lannister’s heart. Despite being a woman, she emerged as a powerful knight in the “Game of Thrones” world which is mostly male dominated. What differentiates her strength from Cersei or Daenerys is that her strength is physical strength on the level of other men in this world. She can hold her own with a sword and does so with immense force which makes it no surprise that her unique attributes landed her a role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
While there has been no official announcement of what her role will be in the film, rumors and speculation have led to the idea that it will be dark and menacing. Based on how she can wield a sword in “Game of Thrones,” I’d expect that she has been pitted for a role where she wields a lightsaber as well. If she ends up being the formidable foe that many have speculated, it will be a first for the Star Wars franchise. The “Star Wars” universe has been male dominated and the inclusion of a key female lightsaber-wielder will definitely be a new addition to what we’ve seen in the past.
